This 12 acre demonstration center is powered by the sun and features a 5,000 square foot strawbale building with passive solar design and recycled materials. The grounds have a wide selection of organic edible and ornamental plants. You will also find numerous interactive exhibits that showcase renewable energy and sustainable living technologies, the world's first solar powered carousel, locally produced biodiesel from waste oil, and a picnic area. You can take a self-guided tour on any day of the week. Just pick up a free self-guided tour brochure from their office. If you want to take a guided tour, they offer a tour every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 11am and 3pm. The guided tour lasts 50 minutes. If you have a group larger than 12 adults or 6 children, they ask that you please arrange a custom tour instead of the regularly scheduled tours. There is a charge for custom tours. For all guided tours, the center's interns will show you around the demonstration site which includes energy systems, water structures, natural buildings, and the organic farm and garden. Individuals, families, and groups are all welcome. To schedule a custom tour for your group, please contact the center at 707-744-2017. The center is open seven days a week and is closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day. Admission is free to the general public, but donations are encouraged. To get there from Ukiah, take Highway 101 south and go about 12 miles. After you pass through the town of Hopland, the center will be on the left. To get there heading north, you will cross a large green bridge on Highway 101 as you enter the town of Hopland. Go about another 1/4 mile and the center will be on the right.
